Reports: Christian Ziegler Wants GOP Payoff to Step Down

SARASOTA -- Florida Republicans may have to pay their party chair to go away.

Florida Politics and the USA Today network are reporting that Sarasota's Christian Ziegler is asking for a seven-figure buyout to step down.

One source says Ziegler is asking for two million dollars, and reports say party leaders have turned him down. Republican leadership is meeting Sunday in Orlando to decide what to do.

Police are investigating a sexual assault allegation against Ziegler but haven't brought charges.

Earlier this week, Ziegler's wife Bridget rejected a resolution asking her to step down. She is not suspected of any crime, but police reports reveal the alleged victim's claim that she was part of a relationship that included both Zieglers.

Ziegler's Democratic counterpart, Nikki Fried, says talk of a buyout shows how little respect he has for Floridians.
