Sarasota School Board Talks About Superintendent's Future

SARASOTA -- School Board members are meeting to discuss the future of their superintendent... and the debate is already breaking down along party lines.

As soon as a conservative majority took over the school board last week, a move to fire Brennan Asplen got on the fast track.

The district has an A rating and Asplen has gotten high marks in previous reviews, but opponents say Asplin "answers to the left" on issues including COVID rules and equity. Sarasota was one of the school districts that defied Governor DeSantis on mask mandates before state lawmakers made that illegal.

Other board members, local nonprofits, and the Sarasota Democratic Party are supporting Asplen and say the district would have a hard time recruiting quality candidates if he gets canned. They plan to rally before the board meets at five this afternoon.

If the board decides to go ahead, another meeting would be held Friday at 6:00 p.m. to discuss contractual and other issues.
