FLORIDA - Publix Super Markets has announced that it will allow customers to openly carry firearms in its Florida stores starting in 2025, following a court ruling that struck down the state’s long-standing open carry ban.

The policy applies only in Florida and aligns with state law, which permits private businesses to set their own rules regarding firearms on their property.

A Publix spokesperson confirmed the company follows all federal, state, and local laws and emphasized that it will contact law enforcement if any customer creates a threatening, erratic, or dangerous situation, regardless of whether a firearm is present.

The spokesperson also highlighted that treating customers with respect and dignity remains a core principle of the company.

Florida’s open carry law took effect on September 25, 2025, after the Florida First District Court of Appeal ruled the state’s previous ban unconstitutional.

The court determined that prohibiting the open display of firearms violated the Second Amendment and lacked historical justification.

The ruling allows individuals to openly carry firearms but permits private property owners to restrict access if they choose.

Several other major retailers, including Winn-Dixie, Walmart, and Sam’s Club, have stated they will continue to prohibit open carry in their stores.

Southeastern Grocers, Winn-Dixie’s parent company, said it requests customers secure firearms safely before entering.

Walmart and Sam’s Club cited safety concerns as the reason for maintaining their policies.

The new law has generated mixed reactions in Florida.

While it expands the legal right to carry firearms openly, businesses and residents must navigate how to balance these rights with public safety, especially in crowded retail environments.
