FLORIDA - Florida lawmakers are considering a new bill that would require background checks for the purchase of ammunition, aiming to increase public safety and reduce gun violence across the state.
The legislation was introduced by Democratic representatives and targets a gap in current law that allows individuals to buy ammunition without a criminal or mental health review.
The proposed bills would apply to all ammunition sales and transfers, including private transactions.
Exemptions would include individuals with concealed carry permits, licensed gun owners, and law enforcement personnel.
Supporters of the measure argue it would prevent individuals prohibited from owning firearms, such as felons or those with certain mental health restrictions, from obtaining ammunition.
The legislation faces challenges due to Florida’s political makeup.
Republicans currently control both the House and Senate, holding a supermajority that could block Democratic-backed bills from passing.
Because of this, the proposed background check requirement would need bipartisan support to advance through both chambers and reach the governor’s desk for approval.
Despite these obstacles, advocates of the bill emphasize its goal of reducing risks associated with unregulated ammunition purchases.
The outcome will depend on negotiations between lawmakers and their willingness to amend Florida’s existing gun laws.
If passed, the law would mark a significant change in Florida’s approach to gun and ammunition regulation, implementing mandatory checks where none currently exist outside firearm purchases.
