Escambia County, FL - Escambia County commissioners voted against renaming North 65th Avenue in Pensacola after conservative activist Charlie Kirk following a meeting on September 16, 2025, where local residents voiced strong opposition.
Commissioner Mike Kohler had proposed changing the street name to either “Charlie Kirk Way” or “Turning Point Way” as a symbolic gesture, but public concerns about divisiveness and logistical challenges led to the withdrawal of the motion.
Residents attending the meeting expressed concerns about the practical implications of changing street names, including updating driver’s licenses, mortgage documents, and other personal records.
Tara Hartman, a resident of North 65th Avenue, questioned the need for the change given these personal impacts.
Others criticized the proposal as politically charged, citing Kirk’s history of controversial statements.
Diane Krumel described the proposal as racially insensitive, while Arentha Welcome and Margie Purkerson emphasized that the street should honor contributions to the local community rather than national political figures.

A few attendees supported the renaming, suggesting it could send a message about political tolerance or commemorate broader ideals.
Larry Downs Jr. expressed personal support but acknowledged the concerns of neighbors.
After listening to over two hours of public comment, Commissioner Kohler stated that he understood the community’s response and decided to drop the motion.
The county commission confirmed the decision, keeping North 65th Avenue’s name unchanged.
