(Miami, FL) - Courtroom fireworks in a gang-related murder case from last summer that has yet to go to trial.
Six suspects, ranging in age from teens to early twenties, are facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootout that went down in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood in July of 2024.
Today, attorneys for all six suspects appeared before a Miami-Dade Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez who was very unhappy that no one was prepared.
Judge Tinkler Mendez chastised the prosecution for dragging their feet on the case. She was incredulous that the state had only taken one out of 17 depositions and that the defense did not have all the discovery. The judge says she wants to try the case in the next 10 months.
The state attorney blamed the police department for officers failing to show up for depositions.
All parties agreed that the delay is unacceptable and promised to get the case organized and back on track.
The shootout was all caught on camera in July of 2024. 24-year-old Andre Mitchell what shot dead and Alfred Vickers II, also 24, suffered multiple gunshot wounds but survived.
Police say over 100 rounds were fired with one of the suspects unloading the magazine of an automatic weapon modified to become a machine gun.
Detectives say one of the suspects, 21-year-old, Ja’twan Phillips, of Miami Gardens is a member of “Slice Gang,” which is a rival to the other suspect's “Boss Life” gang.
