State fish and wildlife officers are working to capture a bear believed responsible for mauling a man in Collier County Monday morning. George Reynaud with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says they've set out four bear traps in the Big Cypress Preserve.
The victim is identified as 89-year-old Robert Merkel, who lives in the isolated area between Alligator Alley and the Tamiami Trail.
Merkel's daughter discovered his dog had fallen victim to a bear attack and then found his body.
