People in Indian River County are being warned of a scam aimed at recently released inmates.

The Sheriff's Office say folks are getting calls from people posing as members of the agency, namely a "Lieutenant Kelly Dorsey" and "Captain Miller."

The mother of a person who was previously locked up in the county jail got one such call yesterday and was told she would need to send five thousand dollars for an ankle monitor. The victim was tricked into sending the money via Zelle.

Deputies say the scammers are likely monitoring public jail release information. The sheriff's office says no law enforcement agency will demand payment over the phone.
