Barry University's Sean Foreman says they can hold a special election this spring or appoint his replacement by Sunday. If commissioners appoint his replacement, it's likely going to be a close relative or political ally since the person must agree not to run for the District 4 seat this November. Two other commission seats and the mayor's seat will also be on the ballot in November.
