FLORIDA - Former President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed U.S. Representative Byron Donalds as his preferred candidate for Florida’s next governor, despite the election being nearly two years away.

On Thursday night, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his support for Donalds, who represents Florida’s 19th Congressional District.

Trump praised the congressman’s leadership, emphasizing his commitment to conservative values and the “America First” agenda.

“I know Byron well, have seen him tested at the highest and most difficult levels, and he is a TOTAL WINNER!” Trump wrote. “Byron has a great wife, Erika, and three beautiful sons. They are very proud of him!”

Donalds, who previously served in the Florida Legislature before winning his congressional seat in 2020, has not yet announced an official bid for governor.

However, Trump stated that if Donalds decides to enter the race, he would have the former president’s “Complete and Total Endorsement.”

“As Governor, Byron would have a BIG Voice, and would work closely with me to advance our America First Agenda,” Trump added. “He will fight tirelessly to Secure our Border, Stop Migrant Crime, Strengthen our Military, Protect our Vets, Restore our Economic Power, Advance American Energy DOMINANCE, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”

Donalds' potential candidacy could lead to a competitive Republican primary.

Reports have suggested that U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is also considering a run for the governor’s office.

Additionally, Florida’s First Lady, Casey DeSantis, had been rumored as a possible contender, though Gov. Ron DeSantis has since dismissed speculation, stating that his wife has "zero interest" in running.

Earlier this week, Trump shared a survey conducted by polling firm Victory Insights, which indicated that Donalds holds a higher “Positive Name ID” than Gaetz in Florida.

The poll suggested that Donalds may have an edge in a potential matchup.
