(Washington, DC) -- Senator Bernie Sanders says generic drugmakers could sell Ozempic for less than $100 a month instead of nearly $1000.
The Vermont Independent made the comment Tuesday, and claimed he received confirmation from major generic pharmaceutical companies that they "could sell cheap copycat versions of the diabetes drug."
According to Sanders, "Novo Nordisk, which has made nearly $50 billion in sales off of Ozempic and Wegovy, charges Americans almost $1,000 a month — the highest prices in the world. Why?"
The head of the company that makes Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, will testify next week before a Senate committee chaired by Sanders focusing on U.S. prices for the popular drug, which is also used for weight loss.
A month supply of Ozempic costs over $900 in the U.S. if not covered by insurance.
