SARASOTA -- Deputies have made an arrest in a shooting that wounded an Auburn football player and killed his brother.
A U-S Marshals Task Force helped capture 28-year-old Darryl Brookins this (Wed) afternoon. He's accused of shooting and killing 24-year-old Tommie Battie IV early Saturday morning in a parking lot on 17th Street. Brookins is also charged with shooting 22-year-old Auburn running back Brian Battie, who remains hospitalized after being shot in the head, and three other victims.
The Sarasota Sheriff's Office also released new details on the shooting, that took place in the parking area outside the Hookah Lounge Marrakech around 3:30 a.m. May 18th. They have surveillance video showing the Battie brothers approaching Brookins, at which point deputies say Brookins drew his weapon and began shooting at them. Both returned gunfire before falling, first Brian, then Tommie. Detectives matched the video with social media and driver's license photos and identified Brookins as the shooter.
Brookins has four felony convictions, meaning he faces Felon in Possession charges for the handgun as well as charges of murder and attempted murder. Brian Battie remains hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head. He played three seasons at the University of South Florida before transferring to Auburn last year.
