JACKSONVILLE -- Governor Ron DeSantis spoke in honor of those who died in service of their nation, at the Memorial Day service Monday morning at Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
DeSantis, who served as an officer in the Navy JAG (judge advocate general) corps, declared that when he flew into Washington's Reagan Airport as a congressman representing Jacksonville, that he could see the monuments at Arlington National Cemetery were the most important. He said they represent the "indispensable Americans" that are willing to stand up and give their lives and are celebrated.
DeSantis referenced Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in the audience, remarking "their sacrifice matters" as have others who have given their lives through history. The governor added that Florida recognizes "in every corner of our state that freedom is not free," and that a debt of gratitude is owed to the fallen."
