St Pete Mayor Gives Voters a Progress Report 100 Days In

ST. PETERSBURG -- Mayor Ken Welch told a reporter he hadn't thought of giving himself a grade.

But in other ways, his news conference was something of a report card on his first 100 days in office.

On the Rays ballpark issue, Welch said he and Pinellas County were on the same page and there have already been meetings with the Rays. He says the developers selected as finalists for the Tropicana Field have good plans in place.

Welch insists his team is making progress on affordable housing, including on the south side. He says a community redevelopment program in south St. Pete has increased incentives to developers, with key stipulations that make additional funds available only if the developer sells to low and moderate income families. He reiterated his opposition to rent control, insisting it doesn't work.

Welch talked aabout climate resiliency and also says he's advanced the city's equity plan to fight structural racism.
