State House Candidate Wants To Cancel Columbus Day

A city commissioner who's running for the Florida Legislature is proposing the cancellation of Columbus Day.

Omari Hardy had planned to bring the issue up during this week's Lake Worth Beach commission meeting, but didn't turn in the resolution in time.

He says that while it's often said Columbus was a great explorer, he was "really just like a terrorist" and not someone Americans should admire and respect. Hardy suggests replacing Columbus Day in October with Indigenous People's Day.

He blames Columbus for bringing thousands of slaves from the Caribbean to Spain.

If the city doesn't approve the idea, Hardy plans to bring it up in Tallahassee if he's elected to the State House in November.
