LAKELAND -- Over the weekend, the one way stickers on the floor disappeared at most Publix supermarkets.
The company says it will only maintain one-way aisles in those parts of its service footprint where they are required by law... Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and Charleston, South Carolina.
Publix says the one-way aisles were created to help customers practice social distancing. Now, ithe company says, social distancing is "routine." Masks will still be required and the six-foot separation stickers at the cash register will stay in place. Of course, the PA announcers will continue to remind you to be socially distant.
Here is a statement from Publix Director of Communications, Maria Brous:
One-way aisles have been discontinued in Publix stores not currently under local ordinance requiring this measure. Miami-Dade and Broward counties are the two Florida counties with ordinances in effect that would keep one-way directional aisles. The other is the city of Charleston in South Carolina.
We continue to take actions across our operations to help safeguard the health and well-being of our customers, associates and communities. We implemented one-way aisles at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic to help our customers understand and practice social distancing and over time, it has become widely understood and adopted into our routines. We will continue to provide friendly social distancing reminders in our stores, through signage, floor markers at checkout and other queuing areas, as well as through our public address announcements.
