Man Fires At Several Drivers in Plant City

PLANT CITY -- A suspect is hospitalized after police say he fired on several drivers in the Plant City area Tuesday afternoon. They stopped him with gunfire.

Plant City police sergeant Al Van Duyne tells reporters that the incident began around 12:30 this afternoon when the suspect tried to flag down and hijack a car at Colson Road and Tower Ridge Lane, just east of State Road 39. According to Van Duyne, the man shot at a driver, who was not injured.

Van Duyne says they received 911 calls that three other cars were fired upon, and a report that a worker at the nearby Sam Astin Strawberry Exchange was wounded.

Plant City officers, Hillsborough deputies and the aviation unit tracked the man to a location on James Redmon Parkway (SR 39) inside the city. They say he was hiding in tall grass and a K-9 was tracking him. They say he fired at officers. A Plant City officer shot back, putting him out of action. The suspect has been taken to a hospital.

The Hillsborough sheriff will investigate the suspect, while FDLE will investigate the officers' conduct.
