The public will soon get a chance to see the only green dinosaur fossil ever discovered Most dinosaur fossils are brown or black. The rare green color is from the mineral celadonite, which forms in volcanic or hydrothermal conditions, which usually destroy buried bones. The long-necked, long-tailed dinosaur is nicknamed "Gnatalie," with a silent G, for the gnats that swarmed a crew during the excavation process in the Badlands of Utah in 2007. It lived an estimated 150 million years ago, during the late Jurassic era, making it older than the T-Rex. Gnatalie will be on display this fall at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
