State Senator Dorothy Hukill Dies

State Senator Dorothy Hukill, who represented parts of Brevard and Volusia counties, died this week, losing a long battle with cancer, according to family members.

Hukill, who had served in the state legislature since 2004, had been diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Treatment for the disease forced her to miss the 2017 legislative session.

She returned for the 2018 session after the cancer reportedly went into remission.

According to Hukill, the cancer returned over the summer.

Last week, she announced that she would not seek further treatment to combat the disease, and would also be ending her bid for reelection.

She said she was choosing to enter hospice care.

Her family reported her death Tuesday.

Friends and colleagues have since sent messages of condolence, with the Florida Senate President noting that she faced her condition "with great courage."
