A Michigan judge has introduced a unique form of community service for shoplifters by ordering them to wash cars in a Walmart parking lot. Judge Jeffrey Clothier, recently elected to the Genesee County District Court, hopes this initiative will deter theft and benefit shoppers who might face higher prices or store closures due to ongoing theft issues.

The car washes, which will be free, are set to take place on weekends in March and April at the Walmart in Grand Blanc Township, located 50 miles north of Detroit. Judge Clothier expects 75 to 100 individuals to participate in these events. He noted that Walmart is supportive of the plan and will provide the necessary water and supplies.

Judge Clothier, who began issuing these "Walmart wash" sentences for misdemeanor shoplifting cases this week, expressed surprise at the extent of retail thefts, mentioning that he had 48 such cases on his docket in one day. He believes the public nature of the car washes might serve as a deterrent, as offenders could encounter people they know while washing cars.

County Prosecutor David Leyton praised the initiative as an innovative approach, telling the Associated Press, "Even if it deters one person, then there's some success there."

Judge Clothier plans to join the shoplifters in washing cars, emphasizing the community aspect of the punishment.
