American gymnast Simone Biles won gold in the women's individual all-around final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Thursday (August 1).
Biles, the most decorated American gymnast in history, has now won nine total medals, finishing with a total of 59.131 points, with Brazil's Rebeca Andrade (57.932) claiming silver and USA teammate Suni Lee (56.465) -- who won the individual all-around at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games -- claiming bronze.
Biles' gold medal victory broke a tie with Shannon Miller for the most total medals by an American gymnast, and extended her American record for most gold medals to six, having previously won the individual all-around during her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and is the first American to ever win the event twice. The 27-year-old led Team USA to gold in the women's team final on Tuesday (July 30).
Biles' first two gold medal victories at the 2024 Paris Games marked the beginning of her Olympic redemption tour after she withdrew from most of the competition at the Tokyo Games due to "the twisties," a temporary loss of air awareness suffered by gymnasts while performing twisting elements. The gold medalist is still scheduled to compete in the vault, floor exercise and balance beam events.
