White House Returns Flag To Half-Staff In Honor Of Senator John McCain

Seen behind the Andrew Jackson statue, the American flag at the White House flies at half staff

The American flag above the White House was lowered back to half-staff just hours after it was raised to its normal position. The flag was lowered on Saturday following the death of Arizona Senator John McCain and remained at half-staff until Monday morning. Many noticed the flag had been raised and questioned why the White House broke the traditional protocol of keeping the flag at half-staff until after McCain's funeral.

Not long after the flag was lowered on Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump issued a statement  saying he "signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of [McCain's] interment."

Trump said that Vice President Mike Pence will deliver remarks during a ceremony honoring McCain that is being held in the U.S. Captial on Friday.

McCain died on Saturday (August 25) at the age of 81 following a battle with brain cancer. He will be buried on Sunday (September 2) at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
