Colorado Police Say Mountain Lion Breaks Into Home, Kills Family's Cat

The Boulder Police Department said Friday that a mountain lion managed to break into a local resident's home and killed her house cat before officers and wildlife officials could scare the wild animal away.

Police say the mountain lion was discovered by the homeowner as she came home late Thursday night. According to the report, the mountain lion had managed to push its way through a screen, but couldn't get back out of the house.

The wild animal reportedly wandered through the two-story home until officers were able to chase it off using non-lethal rounds to scare it out the front door and away from the neighborhood.

Kayla Slaughter says she was sad to see her cat Klondike didn't survive the encounter with the mountain lion.

"I got her my junior year of college," Slaughter told CBS Denver of her cat. "She's been with me for 10 years."

The Boulder Police Department tweeted an image of the trapped mountain lion, with a bit of advice for local homeowners.

Last night, a mountain lion entered a home on Marine St through a screen door, No people were injured but a house cat was killed. Please keep ground level doors and windows closed and locked at night and when you are not home. (This is also good advice for bears and burglars.)
