In the midst of a statewide shortage, the Florida Legislature is diverting money from a trust fund that was set up to help create affordable housing.
Representative Sean Shaw of Tampa says Republicans who control the legislature have been spending that money on everything except housing.
"Over the past decade, more than a billion dollars ... with a 'b' ... has been diverted from Florida's housing programs," he said. "The ongoing situation and aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is heart-wrenching and adding to this problem."
Shaw and some of his fellow Democrats are asking GOP leaders to stop raiding the housing trust fund.
But the House Speaker says they have the legal right to spend that money any way they see fit and they have other priorities.
