Detectives in Volusia County say a boy caught on video taking a package off a front step in Deltona on Monday was only 6 years old.
In a release from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, officials say the homeowner's cameras were rolling as the child ran to the front door of the house, picked up the package, ran back to a waiting car and climbed into the back seat.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office detectives say the child was only part of the story here, and not the most important part.
They say they were more interested in a person who never appeared on camera: The adult who drove the boy to the home.
Wednesday afternoon, detectives say the victim’s video, combined with detective work and license plate reader technology, led to the arrest of their suspect.
Officials say that person was Deltona resident Santana Lindsey, age 20.
Authorities noted that they believed the quick arrest would not have happened without modern technology.
Detectives say that, after the victim contacted the Sheriff's Office on Monday and provided his security video, Detective Miguel Roman got to work to identify the vehicle, a green Infiniti sedan.
Roman searched the state’s Driver and Vehicle Information Database for tag numbers that matched the make, model and approximate year of the suspect vehicle.
Authorities say when he entered the resulting tag numbers into the Sheriff's Office license-plate reader system, he found a match.
Investigators say Roman was able to eventually connect the vehicle with the suspect and the 6-year-old boy seen on video stealing the package.
Detectives say they got a confession from the suspect and were able to take the suepect into custody.
The stolen package was recovered and returned to its owner, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Officials say Lindsey is being charged with principal to burglary, child neglect and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
