Fla. House Speaker Suing Tampa

The Speaker of The Florida House is suing Tampa.

Representative Richard Corcoran of Land O'Lakes says the city passed an illegal bed tax on the downtown area and called it a "Tourism Marketing Assessment."

"If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck," he said. "This is ... it looks like a tax, it spends like a tax, it's collected like a tax ... It's absolutely a tax. So we're asking the court to nullify the tax."

Corcoran says Tampa has already maxed out the bed tax on hotel rooms, but they're trying to get around the cap by attempting to tack on an increase by calling it a special assessment.

He says he is having none of that.

Corcoran's lawsuit was filed in at the circuit court in Hillsborough County.
