LISTEN: Dealing With Gas Shortages During Hurricanes

TAMPA -- When Florida's under the threat of a hurricane, that can mean empty pumps at gas stations, and even stations closing.

You may encounter red bags over pumps, but that doesn't mean you should hoard any more than you need for your car or generator.

Mark Jenkins with Triple-A says deliveries to stations continue before, and after a hurricane.

"The state itself will.. provide law enforcement escorts of tanker trucks to make sure they can get around traffic delays," Jenkins says.

Jenkins says there's not much point to hoarding because there's not a huge stockpile in the state. Most gasoline in the state of Florida is in drivers' tanks.

If you have trouble finding gasoline, stations near major highways are the most likely to be open.

Price gouging is a common complaint about gas stations, but Jenkins says past investigations have found very little occurring at the pumps during hurricanes. But prices may seem high because stations are allowed to pass on increases from the wholesale level.
