Florida's public schools are facing a teacher shortage and in one school district, leaders are taking the matters into their own hands.

Things are so bad in Palm Beach County that the Superintendent of schools says he's planning on pitching in to substitute one class a month.

Michael Burke says the school district has 349 teacher vacancies, which amounts to nearly 3 percent of the total workforce. That's up from the normal one to two percent.

Boynton Beach High School logs the most vacancies at 13.

The president of the Florida Education Association, the statewide teachers union, says there are about 5,100 teaching vacancies statewide. The pandemic is getting the bulk of the blame.

Palm Beach County has a number of recruitment events planned in the coming days.

A virtual teacher recruitment event is happening on Monday at 5:15 p.m.

And a school bus driver shortage continues as well. Click Here for more information on the weekly job fairs.
