(Fort Lauderdale, FL) -- Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie is facing perjury charges.
Runcie was arrested today by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on a charge of perjury in an official proceeding, a third-degree felony. Specifically, Runcie is accused of making a false statement under oath in an official proceeding.
Broward County School Board General Counsel Barbara Myrick, is also indicted and charged with a felony for unlawful disclosure of statewide grand jury proceedings.
Broward County Jail records show Runcie was released on his own recognizance following the arrest.
Runcie was part of a Florida grand jury investigation that was initially tasked with reviewing school safety after 17 people were killed by a gunman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Reports say the grand jury expanded its investigation and was looking into corruption and mismanagement in district operations.
It's unclear from a statement released from the chairwoman of the Broward School Board whether Superintendent Runcie and General Counsel Barbara Myrick will remain in their jobs for the time being.
