Boca Raton City Council Approves Construction Of Communications Tower

The Boca Raton City Council has approved a plan to construct a communication tower on the Municipal Golf Course, despite the objection by hundreds of residents and business owners who have signed a petition to stop the project.

Council members last night voted 3 to 2 in favor of an agreement to work with Palm Beach County, since the tower would be on county-owned land.

Construction of the tower would cost somewhere between $2.3 and $3 million. The city would pay for the building of the tower, while the county would pay to maintain it.

Council members say the project would improve communication with public safety personnel.

Some residents at Tuesday night's meeting urged the council to postpone the vote to no avail. Opponents call the communications tower expensive and unnecessary.

The Palm Beach County Commission will vote on the project on June 27.
