California is about to be home to millions of new fruit flies. The California Department of Food and Agriculture is taking action after invasive, destructive Mediterranean fruit flies were found at a home in Los Angeles. The agency quarantined 69 square miles of the city in response and will release sterile male fruit flies to get rid of them. The males then mate with the females but they cannot produce offspring, gradually decreasing the fruit fly population.
