In some parts of the U.S. there are laws against houses being "too scary" this Halloween. Many homeowner associations have restrictions on how loud your Halloween sound effects may be, or how late you're allowed to frighten people. In Phoenix, Arizona there are zoning laws that prohibit decorations that are too loud or too bright. There are rules in Los Angeles against turning your home into a haunted house, and in some towns, like Irvine, California, decorations that are "too scary" can incur a 500-dollar fee. Legally in the U.S., a trick-of-treater can sue a homeowner for scaring them too much, and causing emotional stress.
