Scientists say they've found a microscopic worm that survived frozen in the Siberian permafrost for 46-thousand years. The tiny nematode was discovered in a fossilized squirrel burrow found in 2002. The worm was resuscitated in 2018 but now researchers have analyzed it to determine its age and about how long it survived in a dormant state. The findings, published this week, suggest that drastic changes to the environment could feasibly cause the frozen worms to escape the ice and repopulate the species.
