There's something new at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas--home field of the Triple-A Space Cowboys. A robot umpire is calling the balls and strikes. The Automated Ball-Strike system, situated at home plate, gathers data from cameras placed around the field. The Hawk-Eye system tracks the pitch and the strike zone, and the robot makes the call. A human umpire gets the call through an earpiece and signals ball or strike. People close to the game say the robot ump system may end up in a Major League ballpark sometime soon.
