DeSantis wants to bring back the Florida State Guard!

Would you be surprised to learn that Florida is the safest state in the nation when it comes to the COVID threat, and has been for awhile now? It's true! Statistics show our state has fewer new COVID cases per 100,000 population than any state. With new concerns about the COVID-19 Omicron variant and ongoing concerns about the Delta variant, we'll put the spotlight on this seriously under reported story. Among the questions we'll raise and debate: why is Florida so safe? Is it Governor DeSantis' policies of letting individuals make their own decisions about protecting themselves from the virus? Is it our mild weather that allows more people to spend time outdoors where the virus doesn't spread as readily as it does indoors? Or, is it something else?

We'll talk about a couple of stories from the Budman's Believe It Or Not file:

*CNN finally decides to fire anchor Chris Cuomo for his efforts to try and keep his brother and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo from being forced out of office over multiple allegations of sexual harassment. Chris Cuomo should have been terminated months ago, but it appears the final nail in Cuomo's professional coffin didn't come until a woman accused him of inappropriate sexual conduct. We'll have the latest on this still developing story.

*Actor Alec Baldwin, in a tearful and disgracefully produced interview with ABC News, makes an incredible claim that he didn't pull the trigger on the gun he was holding that killed a woman and wounded the director during filming for the movie "Rust". Say what?! Baldwin was clearly holding the gun when the fatal shot was fired !! As for the ABC production...what's with the music bed they gave Baldwin?! Was it designed to gin up sympathy for Baldwin as a victim? This isn't a made for TV movie...this is a real life tragedy they're reporting on!!

The parents of that Michigan teenager charged with murdering several of his fellow students last week are now facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. Because it's so rare that parents face charges in a situation like this, we'll debate whether they should be held criminally liable for their son's actions...or not. Given what's reported so far, I have no problem with them being charged. What do you think?

Governor DeSantis is calling for the establishment of the Florida State Guard, a paramilitary force separate from the National Guard, that he could call into action to deal with everything from hurricanes to social unrest. Predictably, DeSantis' critics are up in arms over proposal, but I think the idea has merit and I'll explain why.
