SWAT Team Sniper Takes Down Suspect After 3-Hour Armed Standoff

An armed standoff in St. Petersburg ended early this morning when a SWAT team sniper shot and critically injured a 26-year-old suspect.

It all began just before midnight in the 200 block of 29th Street South, when police say Jerid Fenderson invited a woman, her boyfriend, and her son to stay in his one-room apartment. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said that's when things took a complicated turn. "He invited them over, " the sheriff said. "They didn't have a place to stay. It's a one-room apartment within this multi-room residence. He's got one bed in there. And he comes back and he's ticked off because they're in his bed sleeping. Where did he think they were going to sleep?"

At that point, Gualtieri says Fenderson pointed the gun at the trio, and fired several rounds outside before he was taken down.

Fenderson is expected to survive, and is facing numerous charges. No officers were hurt.
