Tampa Bay & Northeast Florida Prep for Hurricane Eta Impact

Eta is now a Category 1 hurricane and is strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico. It is likely to impact Florida over the next three days.

Eta is currently moving at 15 mph and is about 115 west-southwest of Port Charlotte and 145 miles south-southwest of Tampa. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 75 mph. Forecasters issued a hurricane watch for much of Tampa Bay this morning and a tornado watch has been issued for Hillsborough County and will be in effect until 5 p.m.

According to the National Hurricane Center, winds could continue to intensify through today.  On the forecast track, the center of Eta will move closer to but offshore of the southwest coast of Florida today, approach the west-central coast of Floridatonight, and move inland over the northern portion of the Florida peninsula on Thursday. Eta is expected to move northeastward into the western Atlantic late Thursday or early Friday.
