Mike Tomlin Breaks Record For Most Wins By A Black NFL Head Coach

In a tense match up, the Steelers bested the Ravens 28-24 in last night’s (November 1) game. The victory was celebrated by Pittsburgh as a one-up on their AFC North rivals, but also because head coach Mike Tomlin made history with his 140th career win, the most for any Black head coach in the National Football League.

Tomlin, who is in his 14th season with the Steelers, marked the milestone after exceeding Tony Dungy’s 139 career wins. Dungy led the Indianapolis Colts to victory in the 2006 Super Bowl against the New England Patriots before retiring three years later.

Dungy offered up a congratulatory Tweet to Tomlin after the win.

Tomlin boasts a 2009 Super Bowl title, becoming at the time the youngest head coach in NFL history to win the championship. He has never coached a losing season and currently holds an impressive 140-74 coaching career according to Pro Football Reference.

Tomlin is one of three Black head coaches currently in the NFL. He is joined by Miami’s Brian Flores, and Anthony Lynn of the Los Angeles Chargers.

So far in the season, the Steelers are the only remaining undefeated team and will face the Dallas Cowboys in Texas this Sunday (November 8).
