At Least 30 People Injured After Car Drives into Carnival Crowd in Germany

Police in Germany say the driver responsible for driving into a crowd of people at a carnival parade in the German town of Volkmarsen, has been arrested.

At least 30 people were reportedly injured after the car drove into the crowd, including several small children, CNN reports. It's unclear whether the driver suffered a medical issue, or if the car had a mechanical issue, or whether the driver intentionally drove into the crowd.

According to German news website HNA, witnesses say the driver appeared to be deliberating targeting the crowd and had driven "at full throttle." About a third of those hurt were seriously injured, German newspaper Bild reports. That number has not been confirmed by police.

The crash occurred during "Rosenmontagszug," a German carnival parade that takes place in cities across Germany on the Monday preceding Ash Wednesday. Volksmaren is a small town of around 6,000 residents located about 175 miles south of Berlin, in the north federal state of Hesse in central Germany.
